Our Story

A Silver Lining

2020 brought unbelievable challenges to our entire world, though also some silver linings worth celebrating with gratitude. In March of 2020, Emily Glick, the now-General Manager of the Stavrand, oversaw the temporary closure of the 131-room Kimpton Buchanan Hotel she had helmed in San Francisco for over 6 years. The entire hospitality industry was upside down. At the same time, the pandemic brought an exciting new opportunity... Rewinding to childhood, Emily had dreamed of hosting guests at her very own hotel where she could shape each aspect of the experience to create a property without equal. The pandemic made it possible to realize that vision. Emily and her husband, Sam, enlisted friends and family to help acquire the (dormant) Applewood Inn and used the first half of 2021 to fully renovate the hotel. Today, Emily is thrilled to apply 15 years of industry experience (and a lot of heart) to introduce this special property as a luxury boutique hotel that sparkles in a new way, at a new level.

Today, the Stavrand reflects the ownership group’s reverence for historic landmarks and appreciation of creative modern styling. Service was elevated in concert with the major property improvements; all hosts have been selected and empowered to provide the Stavrand’s signature style of intuitive, authentic service.  They are inobtrusive and yet always available to exceed your expectations for hospitality.  Visit to understand how this team consistently achieves perfect, 5-star Tripadvisor reviews.

Our Complete Renovation

The name “Stav-rand,” in Norwegian (handed down as the family name of Emily’s late mother, whose own parents were innkeepers in Vermont in the early 1980s), conjures the image of a church (Stav) on a rand (hill) – or in the case of the hotel, an historic hillside estate that encourages contemplation in its own way. Additionally, it should be noted that Emily’s mom was a travel advisor who introduced her to four- and five-diamond properties across the country. Maribeth inspired Emily’s enduring love of hospitality.
